A Day on the Canals of Venice

Venice takes one’s breath away. From the beautiful black gondola boats plying the quiet canals, to the bustle of motor boats on the Grand Canal, to the exquisite Doges Palace and St. Mark’s Basilica, Venice is spectacularly beautiful and historically significant. It is also unlike any other city in the world and completely unique. Venice is actually 117 small islands connected by a number of old bridges and separated by canals. All of it can overwhelm your senses but feel exciting, exhilarating and intoxicating too. Walking the narrow pedestrian streets of Venice can give one a sense of how the Venetian’s live. Take the time to walk from the Doge’s Palace all the way to the Vaporetto Boat Dock across from the train station, and wander in and out of the pedestrian alleys and streets along the narrow canals where residents live. Then take the Vaporetto (public boat transport) back to the Doge’s Palace on the Grand Canal to get a sense of how the Venetians move around and get their goods. Wander through St. Mark’s Square and take in the magnificent cathedral facade. Try to get your tickets in advance for both the Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Basilica to avoid waiting in very long lines that will try one’s patience. Better yet, get the Venice City Pass with Doge’s Palace and Public Transport included and make your visit easier and better.

Murano Island

One idea to consider, is to stay on Murano or Burano island, taking a boat in the morning to Venice. These two islands are close enough, but far enough away to feel completely different. They are brilliantly colorful, yet quiet and peaceful.
